President’s Message

Dear Pinellas Colleagues,

October always is a special time of the year for me. We finally get days where air conditioning isn’t mandatory, Halloween/fall decorations,corn mazes, and outdoor festivals. The return of our northern seasonal friends and getting to celebrate another trip around the sun for myself and my wife. It really is a season of change! Rather than waiting for New Year’s Eve, part of this season is always looking back at successes and looking forward to what I hope to change or improve by this time next year.

Sometimes when we are in the trenches day to day, it is hard to see that perspective. You feel pulled along with the momentum of work, and obligations, and don’t get the time to pause and enjoy things. We all work very hard in this field, with many demands and the people and animals depending on us. It is probably part of the reason imposter syndrome is so common in our field. We all care so much, but are worried about being less than perfect, making a mistake or other’s opinions of us. Maybe that’s part of why it’s easier to recall a negative feedback than accept a compliment for some.

With this season of change, I hope each of you finds the time to stop and smell the pumpkin spice and enjoy the moment. Celebrate a success, cheer for a coworker, check in on a friend or family member. If you have trouble knowing what makes you special or excelIent, I suspect that those people you keep close in life have a long list they are happy to share with you. I plan to work on being better at accepting compliments this year, truly hearing and internalizing them, and focusing less on the imperfect moments, and hope you do too. Have a wonderful fall all, and remember change doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
