President’s Message
Dear Pinellas Colleagues,
I hope as we race through summer each of you has found time to enjoy the sun on your face and time for self-care and mental peace. This can be a chaotic job on some days, regardless of best laid plans and schedules. Success for each of us is probably pretty similarly defined: bills paid; patients feeling better; client’s educated; business growing; and team supported. Where we all may diverge is what fills our emotional bucket from this job. What triumphs help you through a day where a case goes sideways, a medical mistake occurs, or the loss of a truly special patient takes your emotional feet out from under you. What makes you show up each day wanting to provide your best, to learn and grow, to educate and mentor. Take a moment to reflect, and I hope it comes to you quickly and resonates.
If you are at a point where that question is hard to answer, it isn’t because you don’t care, it is just that your reason for believing is lost in the chaos around you. Reflect and set aside some time to figure out your motivation, your goals, what really matters about this profession to you as an individual. Then prioritize it, share it, live it whenever you have the chance. This field attracts so many different types of individuals, each with their own professional and personal passions. Keep those personal tethers intact and you can weather any storm.
I always encourage new veterinarians to have an identity outside of the profession. A support system beyond those at work so they see their personal value beyond the role they fill as a veterinarian. It sustains us, even if something in our professional career doesn’t turn out as we expect. It reminds us how we make the world a better place and improve it for those around us even in darker moments. Take a moment to remember all the good you do, and you’ll see as I do, an incredible group of truly special individuals make up our organization and make an immeasurable impact on the world around them.
